This is it. The day where all the training sessions had come to. All those difficult moments and agonising learning points, the dead legs and the dreaded wall that a few had experienced will now be a thing of the past. It is now going to be a mental challenge for the 21 students and 5 staff from Assumption Pathway School to deliver the goods in Terengganu, Malaysia.
The mission sounds simple. Execute a 2-day cycling which will cover slightly more than 200 km around Kuala Terengganu and to Lake Kenyir. But we know, as experiences from the other 3 editions of cycling with students show, nothing can be taken for granted.
This year, the cycling group consists of only boys. For some strange reason, I find that a blessing. And it showed during the training sessions. The group were able to push harder and discipline were kept in check pretty much without a fuss. We were all able to speak the same language. The boys were open, sincere and more accommodating.
So, our adventure will begin on Wednesday, 9 October with a 140 km ride around Kuala Terengganu. The ride will bring us along 30 villages and some of the most remote and scenic sights there. There are long stretches of roads which provide us with uninterrupted cycling, making the effort a more pleasant one.
Day 2 will bring us along 65 km from Kuala Terengganu to Lake Kenyir, a world heritage site. The end will feature 2 insane climbs for the riders. This will be the ultimate feature of the whole adventure, one that will be celebrated as one crosses the line and takes in the beautiful and majestic view of the man-made lake that is known locally as Tasik Kenyir.
We hope to do more than just cycle there. The culture, the hospitality, the way of life of the Terengganu people are just some of the things that we should look forward to. But first, we must contend with the 9-hour bus ride from Singapore.
Oh ya, did I tell you we will meet up with one of the riders from OCBC Continental Cycling Team during a Meet-and-Greet session? Sweet......! The boys will be thrilled!
Wish us well! And check here more often to read updates on our adventure.......
